In a heartfelt appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Assam Congress president and Jorhat MP Gaurav Gogoi has called for the posthumous conferment of India’s highest civilian honor, the Bharat Ratna, on the late iconic singer and musician Zubeen Garg. The request, made through a formal letter on Friday, underscores the profound cultural void left by Garg’s untimely demise in Guwahati.
Garg, revered as one of the most influential cultural figures from Assam and the Northeast, touched millions with his soul-stirring melodies blending Assamese folk traditions with contemporary sounds. Gogoi’s letter paints a vivid picture of the shockwaves sent across the region following Garg’s tragic passing during an official cultural event abroad. ‘His sudden departure has plunged Assam and the entire Northeast into deep mourning, creating a cultural vacuum that’s nearly impossible to fill,’ Gogoi wrote.

Gogoi detailed Garg’s pivotal role in elevating Assamese language, folk heritage, and modern music to national and international audiences. ‘Zubeen Garg’s oeuvre firmly etched Assam and Northeast’s cultural identity on India’s artistic landscape,’ he noted.
