In a significant development ahead of Jharkhand’s urban body elections, Giridih city police have registered an FIR against Leader of Opposition and BJP MLA Babulal Marandi for allegedly violating the Model Code of Conduct. The incident unfolded on February 21 evening, when Marandi reportedly arrived at a hotel near Giridih bus stand around 8 PM, well after the 5 PM campaigning deadline.
According to authorities, a flying squad team member, Mohammad Mansoor, spotted a crowd of supporters gathered at the location. Sadar SDM Shrikant Vispute rushed to the scene and instructed that no gatherings were permitted post-campaign hours. Marandi then left the premises voluntarily.
Speaking to reporters later, Marandi dismissed the allegations, stating he had only gone to the hotel for dinner. He argued that supporters naturally flock to leaders wherever they go, and no formal orders were issued by the SDM to disperse.
BJP state president and MP Aditya Sahu condemned the FIR as a malicious act by the ruling government, accusing it of misusing power to intimidate opposition candidates fearing defeat in the polls. He claimed BJP-backed aspirants are receiving threats, and the administration is failing to ensure fair play.
Sahu urged the Election Commission to intervene and guarantee a fear-free voting environment across the state. Police have launched an investigation into the matter, amid rising political tensions in Jharkhand’s municipal elections.
