The Election Commission of India has rolled out a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in 12 key states and union territories, including populous regions like Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. This critical exercise is designed to enhance the accuracy and fairness of the electoral system. Following the freezing of current electoral lists, the enumeration process will begin shortly, with final updated rolls to be published by February 7, 2025, based on a January 1, 2026, qualifying date. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar stressed the commitment to a clean electoral roll, stating, ‘No genuine voter should lose voting right.’ This revision is a standard democratic procedure to remove outdated entries and include new eligible citizens, thereby strengthening the foundation of democracy. While some political leaders have raised concerns, the ECI maintains that the process will be transparent and inclusive, ensuring that all legitimate voters remain on the rolls and that the integrity of the electorate is preserved. The special provisions for Assam will be handled separately.
