Late Friday night, an earthquake struck Sonipat, Haryana, at approximately 1:47 AM. The earthquake registered a magnitude of 3.4 on the Richter scale. The epicenter of the quake was in Sonipat, at 28.99 degrees North latitude and 76.97 degrees East longitude, with a depth of 10 kilometers. The tremors were felt by residents, many of whom awoke and went outside. The area is situated within a seismically active zone. Authorities have urged people to exercise caution. The Delhi-NCR area frequently experiences tremors due to its location in Seismic Zone-4, a zone considered to have a moderate to high earthquake risk. Delhi-NCR is located close to the Himalayan collision zone, where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates collide, leading to energy build-up and subsequent earthquake activity. Key fault lines near Delhi, including the Delhi-Haridwar Ridge, are contributing factors.
