In a shocking incident at IQ City Medical College Hospital in Durgapur, a second-year medical student took his own life, sending ripples of grief and concern across the campus. The 22-year-old student, identified as Lavanya Pratap from Patna, Bihar, was found hanging in the bathroom of the college hostel on Saturday night.
Police rushed to the scene after receiving reports and recovered the body. Initial investigations point to academic pressure as the trigger, with sources revealing that the student had failed his semester exams and couldn’t clear a single one throughout his course.
Durgapur Assistant Commissioner of Police Subir Roy confirmed the unnatural death report has been filed. ‘The body has been sent for autopsy at Durgapur Sub-District Hospital, and a full probe is underway by Durgapur Police Station,’ he stated.
The student’s father, Anil Kumar, expressed devastation, noting, ‘His exams didn’t go well. When results came, they were sent for review, and perhaps that’s why he made this drastic decision.’
Friends and classmates have been questioned, but college authorities remain tight-lipped, issuing no official statement yet. The campus has been in turmoil since Sunday morning, with the body still at the hospital mortuary as family awaits post-mortem results.
This tragedy revives dark memories of a prior incident at the same institution, where a first-year female student was allegedly gang-raped outside campus last year. Six individuals, including her classmate, were arrested in that case.
As the investigation continues, questions loom over student mental health support in private medical colleges. The autopsy report will provide crucial insights into the exact circumstances, but the loss underscores the immense pressures faced by young aspiring doctors.
