The DMK has criticized Uttar Pradesh for its delayed consideration of granting married daughters equal rights to their fathers’ agricultural land. The DMK highlighted that Tamil Nadu had already passed a law providing women with equal property rights in 1989. The DMK’s official publication, ‘Murasoli,’ stated that Uttar Pradesh is only now realizing what Karunanidhi did 35 years earlier by amending the Hindu Succession Act (Tamil Nadu Amendment). The editorial also cited Periyar E.V. Ramasamy’s early efforts, nearly a century ago, in advocating for women’s rights. The newspaper asserted that Uttar Pradesh’s move signifies the state’s backwardness, referencing Uttar Pradesh’s revenue code and its provisions regarding inheritance of agricultural land. The DMK urged the Uttar Pradesh government to overcome any opposition and ensure women receive their rights, referencing a 2020 court decision upholding women’s property rights.
