Bengaluru: In a firm statement amid swirling rumors of a leadership change in Karnataka, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has urged party workers and the media to keep the chief minister’s position out of public discourse. ‘The CM post is a matter between the party high command and us. It should not become a subject of public discussion,’ Shivakumar asserted during a press interaction on Wednesday.

The remarks come at a time when speculation is rife about a possible power shift within the Congress party in the state. Shivakumar, a key architect of Congress’s 2023 Assembly election victory, has been vocal about his loyalty to the high command while subtly positioning himself as a frontrunner for the top job. However, he emphasized unity and discipline, saying internal matters must be resolved privately to avoid weakening the party’s position ahead of upcoming elections.

Shivakumar’s comments were in response to recent statements from party leaders and social media buzz suggesting dissatisfaction with current Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s leadership. The Deputy CM highlighted his contributions to the party’s success, including mobilizing resources and cadre during the polls. ‘We fought together, won together, and will govern together. Let’s not give ammunition to our opponents,’ he added.

Political analysts note that Shivakumar’s measured tone reflects a strategic balancing act. While he has the backing of a significant section of MLAs, the high command’s preference for Siddaramaiah remains a hurdle. The Vokkaliga strongman also addressed concerns over internal dissent, assuring that no factionalism would be tolerated.

As Karnataka navigates economic challenges and opposition attacks, Shivakumar called for focus on governance deliverables like the Gruha Jyothi scheme and youth employment programs. ‘Our government is delivering on promises. That’s what matters to the people,’ he concluded, signaling his intent to steer the narrative back to performance rather than personalities.
