Following their arrest in Delhi on suspicion of being Bangladeshi nationals, six Bengali migrant workers now face imprisonment in Bangladesh. The workers were initially apprehended in Delhi’s Rohini area and later deported. Upon arrival in Bangladesh, they were detained by the Bangladeshi police, who suspect them of illegal entry. Their families are now appealing for government assistance to secure their release and return.

The families report that the workers were detained by Bangladeshi police in Chapai Nawabganj, Bangladesh, based on suspicions of illegal entry. They were subsequently presented before a Bangladeshi court and are currently incarcerated. Sonali Khatun, along with her husband Danish Sheikh and their five-year-old son Sabir Sheikh, were among those detained. The family was residing in Rohini Sector 26, Delhi, for work. Sonali, who is eight months pregnant, was arrested by the Delhi Police on June 17th. All the detained individuals are from Birbhum, Bengal.

Subsequently, on the 26th, they were deported to Bangladesh. Similarly, Sweety Bibi and her two sons were arrested by the Delhi Police and sent to Bangladesh. The Bangladeshi authorities then apprehended them in Nawabganj, Bangladesh, under suspicion of unlawful entry, and charged them under the Passport-Foreign Act.
