Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan witnessed a large demonstration on Sunday, as hundreds of students protested alleged irregularities in the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) examinations. The protest resulted in police intervention and the detention of several participants. The Congress party has strongly criticized the central government for its handling of the situation, alleging that the government used police force to suppress the student protest and inflict violence. The Congress accused the Modi government of attempting to crush the SSC students’ movement through night-time police action, denouncing the move as unjustifiable. The party pointed out that the students had been voicing their concerns and demanding reforms in the SSC for months, and their decision to protest in Delhi came after their pleas were ignored. The Congress asserted the government is obligated to address the students’ grievances, which they consider legitimate. Protesters described the police action as an attempt to forcibly remove them from the protest site. The protest, which gained traction online, highlighted issues related to recruitment mismanagement and a lack of transparency in the examination process. While the police acknowledged the protest, they refuted any accusations of misconduct, explaining that detentions were made after protesters refused to disperse despite warnings.
