The Delhi-NCR region is on the cusp of a transportation transformation as Prime Minister Narendra Modi prepares to inaugurate two major road projects in Haryana on August 17th. These projects, including the Dwarka Expressway and the Urban Extension Road-2 (UER-2), are designed to significantly improve connectivity and ease traffic congestion for commuters.
The new expressways, which represent an investment of approximately ₹11,000 crore, aim to provide relief to residents of Delhi and Gurugram, thereby also facilitating smoother cargo transport. The Dwarka Expressway, a pioneering 8-lane structure, is a key element of this initiative. It will provide direct access from Gurugram to the Delhi Airport. This will dramatically cut travel times for those commuting to and from the airport from Delhi.
The Dwarka Expressway offers a 20-minute commute from Gurugram to the airport. The new expressway is a significant upgrade from the previously hour-long journeys that were often subject to heavy traffic. The project also features the country’s widest tunnel, spanning 3.6 kilometers.
The Dwarka Expressway will benefit the residents of Gurugram, Dwarka, Vasant Kunj, and adjacent areas. Commuters traveling from places like Faridabad, Manesar, Sonipat, Panipat, and Chandigarh will also enjoy reduced travel times. It is expected that the expressway will reduce traffic volume on the Gurugram road coming from Dhaula Kuan by 50 percent.
The total length of the urban elevated Dwarka Expressway is 29 kilometers, with 18.9 kilometers in Haryana and 10.1 kilometers in Delhi. The expressway begins at Shiv Murti in Mahipalpur, Delhi, and ends at the Kherki Daula toll plaza in Gurugram.
Residents of areas such as Bawana, Narela, Mundka, Rohini, Samaypur Badli, Kanjhawala, and Kirari will see notable benefits from the project. The project will shorten travel times to other parts of Delhi. Moreover, the DDA flats in Narela and Bawana will be more accessible.
The Urban Extension Road-2 (UER-2) is another critical component of the initiative, stretching 75.81 km. This road will have multiple elevated sections designed to reduce congestion in Delhi, Gurugram, Sonipat, and adjacent areas. The project is expected to ease congestion at key junctions such as Mundka, Bakkarwala, Najafgarh, Dhaula Kuan, and Mubaraka Chowk.
UER-2 commences at the Delhi-Chandigarh highway in Alipur, Delhi, and will pass through Mundka, Bakkarwala, Najafgarh, and Dwarka, before connecting with the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway near Mahipalpur. The project, designed as Delhi’s third ring road, is estimated to cost ₹6,445 crore.
UER-II will connect with the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway near Akshardham Temple, helping those traveling to Dehradun from Haryana and Rajasthan. This initiative will also reduce travel times for commuters traveling from Noida to IGI Airport and will reduce congestion on Delhi’s Ring Road, NH-48, NH-44, and the Barapulla Elevated Corridor.
Beyond improving local travel, the Dwarka Expressway will integrate rail, metro, and bus services through multi-modal connectivity. Furthermore, the UER-II will play a crucial role in alleviating traffic in Delhi’s congested areas, providing opportunities to catch flights and trains on time, while reducing the burden of traffic delays.
