New Delhi witnessed a significant step forward in public health on World Cancer Day as Health Minister Dr. Pankaj Kumar Singh inaugurated the Cancer Awareness, Prevention, and Screening Program (CAPS) at the Delhi State Cancer Institute (DSCI). This ambitious initiative aims to bolster early detection, prevention, and accessible cancer care services across the capital.
Surrounded by senior health officials, doctors, nurses, technicians, and healthcare staff, Dr. Singh emphasized the critical role of timely screening and awareness in curbing the rising cancer cases. ‘Our commitment is to save lives through quality treatment,’ he declared, highlighting how Delhi’s advanced healthcare draws patients from neighboring states, leading to higher reported incidences but also underscoring the dangers of delayed testing.
The government is adopting a community-based approach, with a special focus on making cancer screening routine and accessible for women. State-of-the-art mobile cancer screening vans equipped with mammography and HPV DNA testing will be deployed to key locations and remote areas, allowing residents to get screened without disrupting their daily routines.
A highlight of the event was the launch of a self-testing kit for convenient and private screening. Women can collect vaginal swab samples at home, store them in labeled vials, and have them tested via RT-PCR for HPV DNA. Results will be shared within a week, followed by medical advice and necessary treatment referrals. Mammography reports will receive immediate analysis, with follow-up care ensured for those needing it.
The program extends to broader awareness campaigns on early detection methods, anti-tobacco drives, and promoting cervical cancer vaccination to mitigate future risks. Under Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s leadership, the strategy emphasizes prevention, early diagnosis, and prompt treatment. Regular screening camps, robust infrastructure, and advanced diagnostics target breast, cervical, and oral cancers specifically.
Dr. Singh reiterated that cancer prevention aligns with the Prime Minister’s vision, with the government intensifying awareness to encourage early testing. Plans include imminent rollout of cervical cancer vaccination and mobile van services. ‘Our goal is to prevent where possible and ensure timely, high-quality treatment for every citizen,’ he affirmed.
Reaffirming the government’s dedication to public health, Delhi is enhancing cancer care services to provide accessible, affordable, and top-tier healthcare to all residents.
