New Delhi’s Chief Minister Rekha Gupta unveiled a transformative initiative on Tuesday, the ‘Delhi Lakhpati Beti Yojana’, aimed at securing financial stability and uninterrupted education for girls from economically weaker families. This scheme breathes new life into the 2008 Ladli Yojana, upgrading it after over a decade with enhanced features and better delivery mechanisms.
The program is designed to prevent any Delhi girl from dropping out of school due to financial hurdles. It builds a long-term savings corpus that matures at key educational milestones, providing a substantial payout upon completion of graduation or diploma. ‘No daughter of Delhi should have her dreams curtailed by money worries,’ Gupta declared during the launch.
Under the scheme, the government will deposit up to Rs 56,000 in structured financial instruments linked to the beneficiary’s Aadhaar-connected bank account. These funds, invested wisely, will grow with interest, potentially exceeding Rs 1 lakh by maturity. Installments are released from birth through higher education stages, ensuring steady support.
Gupta highlighted the personal significance of the program: ‘This is close to my heart, a commitment to empowering every Delhi girl to reach her full potential. It’s an investment in our daughters’ futures—and thus, our nation’s.’ She revealed a shocking discovery upon taking office: over 1.86 lakh matured Ladli accounts lay unclaimed, denying girls their rightful dues.
Addressing this legacy issue head-on, the government has already disbursed Rs 90 crore to 30,000 beneficiaries in 2025. Another 41,000 girls have been identified for Rs 100 crore more, totaling Rs 190 crore in rightful payouts. ‘We won’t let any girl be deprived of her benefits,’ the CM assured.
Renamed ‘Lakhpati Beti Yojana’ to reflect its ambitious vision of making girls financially independent, the scheme underscores Delhi’s dedication to girls’ rights, dignity, and bright futures. With streamlined processes, it promises efficient delivery straight to bank accounts.
