New Delhi, February 15: In a strong push for legislative oversight, Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta on Sunday issued directives to lawmakers, emphasizing the critical need for regular attendance in committee meetings. He described these committees as the bedrock of effective governance scrutiny, relying heavily on members’ dedication and active involvement.
Gupta’s advisory targets members of various committees in the eighth Delhi Assembly. ‘Committees play a pivotal role in probing government operations, administrative functions, and ensuring public accountability,’ the statement read. He stressed that meaningful participation strengthens institutional mechanisms and leads to more comprehensive, actionable recommendations.
Highlighting operational efficiency, the Speaker noted that senior officials from relevant departments must attend these sessions to provide vital data and insights. Their presence, he said, elevates discussions and accelerates decision-making processes.
In parallel, the Delhi government’s General Administration Department has mandated all administrative secretaries to appear whenever summoned by the Assembly Secretariat. If unable to attend, they must deputize a senior officer fully briefed on the matter, with prior approval.
Secretaries have also been instructed to furnish information and documents requested by committees promptly. These measures aim to foster better coordination between the legislature and executive, ultimately enhancing the committee system’s effectiveness in Delhi’s governance framework.
