A horrific bus accident in Dehradun’s Vikasnagar area has claimed three lives and left several others critically injured. The Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) bus, carrying over 30 passengers, plunged into a deep gorge near Sudoi Khadd in the Kwanu region on Thursday morning.
The incident occurred around 10 AM when the bus, en route from Chaupal-Nerwa to Paonta Sahib via Meens-Kwanu-Haripur road, reportedly lost control while giving way to a truck. Eyewitnesses described how the road edge collapsed, causing the vehicle to overturn multiple times before tumbling into the ravine.
State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams rushed to the scene immediately after receiving reports. Kalsi police station personnel are managing the rescue operations. Local residents also joined in the frantic efforts to pull survivors from the wreckage.
Medical teams have transported at least 15 severely injured passengers to nearby hospitals. All regional medical centers have been placed on high alert, with provisions for airlifting critical cases if needed.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed profound grief over the tragedy. In a post on X, he revealed that he had spoken directly with the Dehradun District Magistrate, issuing immediate directives for relief and rescue.
“The administration and police have launched swift rescue operations. Nearby medical facilities are on high alert, and severe cases will be airlifted to advanced centers if required,” Dhami stated, praying for the safe recovery of all passengers.
Preliminary investigations point to road conditions and possible speeding as contributing factors. Rescue operations continue amid challenging terrain, with authorities promising a thorough probe into the cause.
This devastating crash underscores ongoing concerns about mountain road safety in Uttarakhand, where narrow paths and steep drops pose constant risks to commuters. Officials urge drivers to exercise extreme caution on such routes.
