Patna erupted in political drama on Tuesday as Congress lawmakers took center stage in the Bihar Assembly’s budget session, launching a fierce protest against the state’s deteriorating law and order situation. With the session barely underway, opposition members had already turned the legislative premises into a battleground, chanting slogans and attempting to corner the government.
Leading the charge, Congress MLAs from Chhaptiya, Abhishek Ranjan, and his colleagues arrived brandishing an effigy of the state government, adorned symbolically with bangles to mock its perceived weakness. The protesters accused the Nitish Kumar administration of monumental failure in maintaining security, particularly highlighting recent horrific crimes against women and children.
Ranjan pointed to the tragic death of a girl from Jehanabad in a Patna hostel, where justice remains elusive months later. He also referenced the brutal rape and murder of an innocent child in Darbhanga, underscoring a pattern of unchecked violence. ‘The rule of law in Bihar is dead,’ he thundered, pasting details of recent atrocities on the effigy.
The demonstration grew louder with demands for Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s resignation. Congress insists on immediate stringent actions against criminals, enhanced protection for women and girls, and a sensitive approach from the government. They slammed the administration for empty rhetoric instead of concrete measures, allowing perpetrators to evade timely punishment and fostering a culture of impunity.
This outburst follows Monday’s chaos in the Legislative Council, where similar concerns sparked a heated exchange between Nitish Kumar and former CM Rabri Devi. As opposition raises valid alarms, they claim the government responds by digging into their files rather than addressing the crisis. The budget session promises more fireworks as law and order remains a flashpoint.
