In a crucial meeting with Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu made a fervent plea to safeguard the state’s apple growers. The discussion centered on imposing a strict ban on apple imports during the vital peak season, a move aimed at protecting local farmers from unfair foreign competition.

Himachal Pradesh’s apple industry stands as the backbone of its economy, employing lakhs of families and contributing significantly to the state’s revenue. The influx of cheaper imported apples, primarily from China and other nations, has been flooding markets just when domestic produce peaks, driving down prices and causing massive losses to growers. This year alone, farmers have reported distress sales at throwaway prices, barely covering cultivation costs.

CM Sukhu highlighted the dire situation during his Delhi visit, emphasizing how imports undermine the livelihoods of over 3 lakh apple growers. ‘Our farmers invest heavily in high-altitude orchards under harsh conditions. They deserve protection from dumped imports,’ he stated. The request aligns with long-standing demands from the apple belt regions like Shimla, Kullu, and Mandi.

Minister Goyal assured a detailed review of the proposal, acknowledging the agricultural sensitivities. Sources indicate the Centre might consider safeguard duties or seasonal quotas. Meanwhile, Sukhu also raised concerns over GST on apple packaging materials and sought enhanced support under central schemes.

This advocacy comes amid growing unrest in apple-growing districts, where federations have warned of protests if relief isn’t forthcoming. A ban during September to November – the peak harvest – could stabilize prices and boost farmer incomes by 20-30%, experts estimate. As the state gears up for another bumper crop, all eyes are on New Delhi’s response to this timely intervention.
