Initially, the CID filed a case against the arrested individuals under sections 61(2) (criminal conspiracy) and 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. The murder charge was later added. The investigation team stated that section 103 of the BNS has been added, and the investigation is ongoing. Zubeen Garg was scheduled to participate in the North East India Festival in Singapore on September 20, which was organized by Shyamkanu Mahanta. Garg died the day before the event. Initial reports suggested the cause of death was scuba diving, but the post-mortem report indicated drowning. This has led to a thorough investigation.
