In a bold move to preserve harmony, residents of Medhki village in Chhattisgarh’s Balod district have imposed a hefty fine of Rs 5,001 on anyone caught gossiping. This unprecedented decision, unanimously approved in a village meeting, aims to curb the rising tensions fueled by rumors and backbiting.
Over recent months, the once-peaceful community has witnessed strained relationships. Minor issues exaggerated through whispers led to bitterness and frequent disputes. Frustrated by the deteriorating atmosphere, villagers united to enforce strict measures against those spreading malicious tales.
The penalty extends beyond gossip. Disruptions at social or religious gatherings due to alcohol consumption will also attract the same fine. Drunken brawls often escalate into public humiliations, villagers noted, further eroding communal bonds.
Local leader Dhanraj Sahu emphasized that the rule targets no individual but safeguards the entire village. ‘Gossip breeds distrust and weakens our social fabric,’ he stated. ‘This financial deterrent will encourage responsible behavior and foster a tranquil environment.’
Elders like Horilal echoed the sentiment, reminiscing about eras when trust defined village life. ‘Modern habits like rumor-mongering and intoxication are cracking our unity,’ he said. With this collective resolve, Medhki hopes to revive brotherhood, reduce conflicts, and set an example for others.
