Broken Dreams Find Support and a Roof of Hope Sprouts in the Courtyard of Clay
For years, Somari Punem struggled and never thought that one day she would have a permanent roof over her head. After her husband’s death, she was living with her son under a small, leaking thatched roof amidst countless hardships. When she learned about the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana after the Niyad Nella Nar scheme started, her eyes lit up. She says, “I invested whatever little savings I had. Every day I sat with the laborers and lifted the bricks myself. The house kept getting built… and so did my confidence. Finally, after months of hard work, a permanent house was ready. Now the raindrops bring relief, not fear… Even the nights feel peaceful. Now not only the walls are protected from the sun, but also my dignity.”
Somari, 60, who lives in Cherpal, Bijapur, says, “Today, when I enter my house through the door, I don’t feel alone. Along with me, my late husband’s dream is also breathing in this house.” The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana has not only given Somari a house. This scheme has descended into her life as a foundation of trust, walls of self-respect and a roof for the future.
