Nine new urban bodies came into existence in the state last year, and seven town panchayats were upgraded to municipal councils.

Nine new urban bodies were formed in Chhattisgarh between January and December last year. During this time, the state government also upgraded seven town panchayats to municipal councils. The state government, considering the demands of local residents sensitively, approved the formation of new urban bodies to fulfill public aspirations. This will accelerate the development of urban amenities in towns developing as emerging cities. With the newly formed urban bodies, the total number of urban bodies in the state has reached 192. These include 14 municipal corporations, 54 municipal councils, and 124 town panchayats.

Under the leadership of Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Dev Sai, nine new town panchayats were formed in the calendar year 2024 to meet the demands of the state’s town population and accelerate infrastructural development in line with emerging cities. On the initiative of the Deputy Chief Minister and Minister of Urban Administration and Development, Shri Arun Saw, swift action was taken to form new urban bodies and upgrade town panchayats with larger populations to municipal councils to fulfill and give concrete shape to local aspirations.

Based on the demands of public representatives and local people, between January and December 2024, Lal Bahadur Nagar and Ghumka in Rajnandgaon district, Jarhagaon in Mungeli, Patna in Korea, Kusmi in Bemetara, Devbhog in Gariaband, Shivnandanpur in Surajpur, Bamhnidih in Janjgir-Champa, and Palari in Balod district were made town panchayats. Considering public aspirations, Gorela town panchayat and Pendra town panchayat in Gorela-Pendra-Marwahi district were upgraded to municipal councils. Along with these, Lorami town panchayat in Mungeli district, Abhanpur town panchayat in Raipur, Bodri town panchayat in Bilaspur, Simga town panchayat in Balodabazar-Bhatapara, and Ramanujganj in Balrampur-Ramanujganj were also upgraded to municipal councils.
