A resident of Raipur, Chhattisgarh, has become the latest victim of an online scam, losing a substantial sum of money through a WhatsApp-based attack. The victim, an insurance advisor named Devendra Singh Rism, received a wedding invitation via WhatsApp. Curiosity led him to open the e-card, but doing so resulted in his phone being hacked. His phone quickly began to malfunction. Unauthorized transactions then began to deplete his bank account. Recognizing the situation, Rism promptly blocked his bank account and reported the fraud to the police. The investigation is ongoing. The total amount stolen from Rism’s account was Rs 4.80 lakh, highlighting the dangers of clicking on unverified links and attachments, even those that appear to be from trusted sources. The incident reinforces the need for heightened vigilance against cyber threats.
