Chhattisgarh has introduced new rules preventing the registration of agricultural land sales for land parcels under 5 dismil. The Inspector General (Registration) has informed all district registrars of this change. This is a result of the ‘Chhattisgarh Land Revenue Code (Amendment) Bill-2025’ introduced in the Chhattisgarh Assembly, which outlines several guidelines for land transactions. The order is effective following its official publication in the gazette. The earlier practice of registering small land parcels contributed to a surge in illegal plotting across the state, creating several issues. The new rule, however, will not affect urban areas, where the land is primarily not agricultural. Registrations of land diverted for commercial or residential purposes in urban areas will proceed as before. The amendment bill also brings into effect georeferencing technology. This will enable the creation of digital maps throughout the state, designed to minimize conflicts in land demarcation, division, and name transfers. These digital maps will be legally recognized and valid in legal and administrative scenarios.
