To combat the increasing number of deaths among two-wheeler riders in Raipur due to head injuries, the police have initiated a crucial measure. SSP Dr. Lal Umed Singh has instructed all two-wheeler showrooms to make it mandatory to provide a helmet with every new vehicle sold. Non-compliance with this directive will result in severe penalties. According to the Raipur police, over 20,495 traffic violations were recorded in the last seven months for not wearing helmets. Despite several awareness campaigns and distribution of helmets, numerous individuals continue to disregard safety standards. This has contributed to 190 deaths in the last seven months alone. The Motor Vehicles Act of 1989, under Section 138, clearly states that sellers of two-wheelers are required to provide a helmet with each purchase. However, many showroom owners have not been adhering to this regulation. The SSP’s order highlights that violations will result in actions under Motor Vehicle Rules 33-44, including the possibility of suspending or revoking business certificates. The main objective of this decision is to raise awareness about the significance of helmets and to lower the number of fatalities in road accidents.
