Raipur. December 27, 2024/
A skilled team of doctors from the heart surgery department of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Smriti Chikitsalaya, Chhattisgarh’s largest government hospital, has given a 50-year-old woman a new lease on life by performing successful open-heart surgery. This successful operation was performed under the leadership of Dr. Krishnakant Sahu, Head of the Heart Surgery Department. The woman’s condition is good post-surgery, and she is currently under the doctor’s care. The patient underwent valve replacement.

Health Minister Shri Shyam Bihari Jaiswal congratulated the hospital administration for the launch of the open-heart surgery facility, presenting it as a gift to the state’s residents for the new year. Shri Jaiswal stated that bypass surgery will also be initiated soon.

The 50-year-old female patient from Mahasamund had been experiencing shortness of breath for about three years. Even minor exertion would increase her heart rate (heart palpitations). With these problems, she went to Dr. Krishnakant Sahu in the Heart Surgery Department of Ambedkar Hospital’s Advanced Cardiac Institute. He conducted a thorough examination. The examination revealed a narrowing and leakage in one of her heart valves. The valve had narrowed so much that doctors had recommended surgery three years prior, but the patient and her family were scared of open-heart surgery and refused at the time. The problem worsened, and the patient returned to Dr. Krishnakant Sahu. He provided her with complete information about open-heart surgery and counseling, explaining the improvements in her health post-surgery in detail.

Considering the patient’s condition, Dr. Krishnakant Sahu informed Dr. Santosh Sonkar, Superintendent of Ambedkar Hospital, about the seriousness of the case and the need for open-heart surgery. Following instructions from Health Minister Shri Jaiswal, cardiac anesthetists, perfusionists, and other human resources were immediately arranged. Finally, on December 26, the patient underwent open-heart surgery, where an artificial valve was implanted and one valve repaired. This operation is medically termed mitral valve replacement using a bileaflet metallic prosthetic valve plus tricuspid valve repair under heartlung machine.

Dr. Krishnakant Sahu, providing information about the patient’s current condition, stated that she ate breakfast, lunch, and dinner unassisted today. Her condition is continuously improving.

The team that performed the patient’s surgery included Dr. Krishnakant Sahu, Head of Heart Surgery; cardiac anesthetist Dr. Varun; perfusionists Rahul and Digeshwar; and nursing staff Rajendra, Narendra, and Chova Ram.
