What began as a simmering feud between two groups on Sunday escalated into a frenzy of beatings, arson, and stone-throwing attacks.
According to authorities, the clash traces back to a religious dispute nearly a year old. A man recently released from jail after his arrest in that case returned to the village and allegedly sparked fresh trouble by assaulting locals. Enraged villagers mobilized quickly, hunting for the suspect and his associates, which rapidly spiraled out of control.
In a fit of fury, mobs set fire to four homes linked to the accused’s side. Flames gutted several structures, causing significant damage, though no fatalities have been confirmed. Police rushed to the scene to disperse the crowd, only to face a barrage of bricks and stones. Several officers and villagers sustained minor injuries in the melee, forcing law enforcement to resort to force to restore order.
Raipur Range IG Amresh Mishra arrived promptly to assess the situation alongside senior officials. While police claim control has been regained, extra forces remain stationed in the village and nearby areas as a precaution.
Gariaband SP Vedvrata Sirmaur detailed the incident: A suspect named Arif, out on bail, picked fights with villagers and even stirred trouble in a neighboring village. Three FIRs have been filed at Rajim police station. Infuriated locals laid siege to his homes, igniting the blaze. Three arrests have been made so far, with more suspects under identification.
