    New Delhi, August 30.
The Mahanadi, a major river in India, which originates from Chhattisgarh and flows through Odisha to the Bay of Bengal, has long been a cause of dispute.

To resolve this long-standing dispute through talks, an important meeting was held in New Delhi on August 30, 2025. The chief secretaries of Chhattisgarh and Odisha and the secretaries of the Water Resources Department participated in it. In the meeting, both the states acknowledged that this problem is very old and difficult, but a solution has to be found by sitting together and discussing it for the good of the people and both the states.

It was also decided in the meeting that from September 2025, technical committees of both the states, which will include engineers and experts, will meet every week. These committees will identify the main issues and try to find a solution to them. Also, they will also see how better coordination can be created between the two states.

In October 2025, the chief secretaries of both the states will hold another meeting. The Water Resources Secretary will also be involved in this. If all goes well, the chief ministers of both the states can also meet by December and decide the future direction.

In the end, both the states promised that they would talk honestly and openly, so that a solution to the Mahanadi water dispute could be found that would be beneficial to all.

Experts believe that if this initiative is successful, it will be an example not only for Odisha and Chhattisgarh, but for the entire country that even big and old disputes can be resolved through mutual talks and cooperation.
