Torrential rains have caused severe damage in Jammu and Kashmir. A landslide on Wednesday near Mata Vaishno Devi Dham in the Reasi district has resulted in the loss of at least 31 lives and left 23 people injured. Rescue teams are currently working to locate and assist any individuals who may be trapped in the rubble.

The Jammu-Katra highway is currently impassable due to the landslide, leading to significant traffic disruptions. Northern Railway has been forced to cancel 22 trains and shorten the routes of an additional 27, including 9 trains that originate from the Vaishno Devi base camp.

The ongoing rainfall has increased the risk of both flooding and further landslides. The region from Jammu city to Kathua, Udhampur, Samba, and Reasi is experiencing extensive damage. Several bridges have collapsed, and numerous mobile towers and power lines have been damaged.

Relief efforts are being spearheaded by the administration, army, NDRF, and SDRF teams. Over 3,500 individuals have been relocated to safer areas. The displaced individuals are receiving food, water, and medical support at temporary shelters.

The meteorological department has issued a weather advisory indicating that clouds are reaching 12 km in height. This suggests the possibility of stronger storms and continued heavy rainfall in the coming days.
