Chennai is gearing up for a massive voter registration drive this Sunday across all 16 assembly constituencies. A total of 4,097 polling stations will host special camps aimed at enrolling new voters and reinstating those whose names were recently removed from the electoral rolls.

The initiative forms part of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists, launched in November 2025. Following the revision, a draft list revealed nearly 1.5 million names deleted district-wide. Among these, about 150,000 belonged to deceased individuals, while 160,000 were struck off due to unverified addresses or failed contact attempts.

Many deletions stemmed from voters relocating within or outside the district to other constituencies. Officials emphasize that these voters remain eligible but were removed due to address changes, migration, or incomplete verification during the process.

To ensure no eligible voter is left out, the corporation has organized these extensive camps. ‘This is a golden opportunity for first-time voters to register and for others to verify and restore their status,’ said an election department official.

All 4,097 polling stations in the 16 constituencies will participate. The deadline for inclusions is January 31. Citizens are urged to bring valid ID and address proof. This final round of camps precedes the finalization of the voter list, crucial for fair and inclusive elections.
