In a significant push for cultural recognition, Jalandhar MP and former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi has urged the central government to declare February 1, 2026, as a national holiday on the occasion of Guru Ravidas Jayanti. Writing a formal letter to the Lok Sabha Speaker, Channi emphasized the saint’s profound impact on Indian society.

Guru Ravidas, revered not just as a spiritual leader but as a champion of social equality and human dignity, continues to inspire millions across the nation. Channi highlighted that the saint’s teachings on equality and brotherhood form the bedrock of India’s constitutional values. ‘Their philosophy is integral to our civilizational ethos,’ he stated in the letter.

The demand gains urgency because February 1, 2026, coincides with the presentation of the Union Budget in Parliament. While the day is already a restricted holiday and falls on a Sunday, MPs will be required to attend sessions, preventing many devotees from participating in celebrations. Channi argued that millions of followers in states like Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi, and beyond observe the day with immense devotion through religious, social, and cultural events.

‘Declaring it a national holiday would honor Guru Ravidas’s legacy and respect the sentiments of his followers,’ Channi wrote, requesting adjustments to parliamentary proceedings accordingly. This move underscores the growing call to formally acknowledge the contributions of figures who shaped India’s social fabric.

As political leaders amplify voices for inclusivity, Channi’s plea could spark broader discussions on recognizing diverse cultural milestones nationally. The government’s response will be watched closely by Ravidasia communities and equality advocates nationwide.
