In a major push to enhance connectivity in Assam, the Central Government has greenlit 10 road projects and 16 bridge initiatives, allocating over Rs 747 crore under key infrastructure schemes. This move is set to transform travel and transport across the northeastern state.

Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari announced the approvals, highlighting Rs 617.98 crore for the roads under the Central Road and Infrastructure Fund (CRIF). An additional Rs 129.74 crore has been sanctioned for the bridges via the CRIF Setu Bandhan scheme.

Taking to social media, Gadkari emphasized how these projects will strengthen regional links, slash travel times, and streamline logistics. ‘Robust roads and bridges are the backbone of national progress, especially in vital areas like the Northeast,’ he stated.

The approved roads target critical links between districts, markets, and industrial hubs, ensuring smoother connectivity. Under the bridge scheme, dilapidated structures will be replaced with modern ones, crucial for flood-prone riverine regions where safety has long been a concern.

Assam Government officials welcomed the decision, noting it will spur trade, ease movement of people and goods, and boost agriculture, small businesses, and tourism. Remote villages will gain better access to healthcare, education, and essential services.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has repeatedly underscored infrastructure as the cornerstone of Assam’s growth. These projects align with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, aiming for seamless integration of development efforts nationwide.

As the gateway to the Northeast and pivotal to India’s Act East Policy, Assam has seen sustained road investments from the Centre in recent years. The new initiatives promise reduced transport costs, efficient freight movement, and accelerated socio-economic development.
