In a major crackdown on corruption, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a senior officer from the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) red-handed while accepting a hefty bribe. The raid, conducted late last night in the national capital, uncovered a staggering Rs 3.7 crore in cash, marking one of the largest bribe recoveries in recent times.

The accused, identified as a high-ranking executive engineer, was trapped in a meticulously planned operation after credible intelligence pointed to his involvement in corrupt practices. Sources reveal he demanded the bribe from a private contractor in exchange for clearing pending bills and awarding lucrative contracts for government infrastructure projects.

Acting swiftly on a tip-off, CBI sleuths laid a trap and caught the officer accepting the initial installment of Rs 50 lakh. A subsequent search of his premises led to the shocking discovery of unaccounted cash stashed in various locations, including hidden safes and almirahs. Preliminary investigations suggest the money was proceeds from multiple bribery deals spanning several years.

This arrest sends a strong message to corrupt officials exploiting public funds meant for nation-building. The CPWD, responsible for constructing and maintaining key government buildings and infrastructure, has been under scrutiny for systemic graft. The agency has registered a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act and is interrogating the officer to unravel the broader network.

As the investigation deepens, questions arise about internal oversight mechanisms and the need for stricter vigilance. The recovery of such a massive sum underscores the pervasive nature of corruption in public works departments. CBI officials assure that no stone will be left unturned in exposing the full extent of the scam, promising more arrests in the coming days.
