In a major boost to aviation infrastructure in the Kashmir Valley, the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has greenlit a Rs 1,677 crore project to develop the civil enclave at Srinagar International Airport. This ambitious initiative, approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), aims to significantly enhance connectivity and passenger handling capacity in the region.
Spanning 73.18 acres, the new civil enclave will feature a state-of-the-art terminal building with a total area of 71,500 square meters, incorporating 20,659 square meters of existing structure. Designed to handle 2,900 passengers during peak hours, the terminal will boast an annual capacity of 10 million travelers. The project also includes barracks for security personnel, underscoring its dual civilian-military significance.
Key highlights include an expanded apron with parking bays for 15 aircraft, comprising space for one wide-body Code E aircraft—nine existing and six new. The 3,658-meter-long and 45-meter-wide runway will continue to be operated by the Indian Air Force. Additionally, a multi-level parking facility for 1,000 cars will cater to growing vehicular traffic.
The terminal’s architecture blends modern design with Kashmir’s rich cultural heritage, featuring traditional wood carvings and local craftsmanship. Passengers will enjoy streamlined processing areas, spacious lounges, advanced security, and efficient check-in facilities, elevating the travel experience to international standards.
Located within the Indian Air Force’s Badgam airbase complex, about 12 km from Srinagar city, the airport received international status in 2005. Managed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), this upgrade transcends mere infrastructure—it promises to turbocharge tourism and economic growth.
Enhanced connectivity will make iconic sites like Dal Lake, Shankaracharya Temple, and Mughal Gardens more accessible, drawing global visitors. The project is set to generate jobs, attract investments, and position Srinagar as a thriving hub for tourism and commerce. By delivering world-class facilities, it will showcase Kashmir’s natural and cultural splendor on the world stage, fostering sustainable development in the valley.
