New Delhi is buzzing with anticipation as the Indian Parliament’s Budget Session commences today, Wednesday, marked by a momentous address from President Droupadi Murmu to a joint sitting of both Houses. This ceremonial start sets the stage for one of the year’s most critical legislative events.

Reports indicate that Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is slated to unveil the Union Budget for 2026-27 on February 1. Adding to the schedule, the Economic Survey is expected to be tabled in Parliament on January 29, providing key insights into the nation’s economic health.

Earlier this month, Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju announced on social media platform X that President Murmu has approved the summoning of both Houses for the Budget Session 2026. The session will run from January 28 to April 2, with the first phase concluding on February 13, followed by a recess until March 9.

This two-phase structure allows for initial debates on the Budget and other pressing matters, followed by in-depth scrutiny by parliamentary standing committees during the break. The session will then resume for final discussions and passage of financial bills, underscoring the government’s commitment to transparent and effective legislative processes.

Coming at a pivotal time, the session addresses pressing challenges in economic growth, fiscal resilience, infrastructure development, job creation, and sustainability. Lawmakers from all political parties are expected to engage in robust discussions on taxes, public expenditure, and policy reforms. In total, Parliament will hold 30 sittings over the course of the session, promising meaningful deliberation and people-centric governance.
