On this day in 1931, India’s fearless revolutionary Chandrashekhar Azad breathed his last in Allahabad’s Alfred Park, choosing death over surrender to British forces. Born in Bhopawar, Madhya Pradesh, Azad’s unyielding spirit continues to inspire generations. As Bollywood often turns to history for cinematic gold, several films have captured his bravery and ideals, keeping his legacy alive on the silver screen.

The pioneering portrayal came in 1965’s ‘Shaheed,’ primarily focused on Bhagat Singh but featuring a memorable Azad by Manmohan. His depiction of the revolutionary’s defiance left an indelible mark, resonating with audiences even decades later.

Fast forward to 2002, and the Deol duo stole the show in ’23rd March 1931: Shaheed.’ Bobby Deol embodied Bhagat Singh while Sunny Deol channeled Azad’s indomitable courage. The film’s raw emotion and historical fidelity earned widespread acclaim. Sunny revisited revolutionary themes in ‘The Hero: Love Story of a Spy,’ where Azad’s essence shone through in the climactic moments.

Rajkumar Santoshi’s ‘The Legend of Bhagat Singh’ that same year spotlighted Akhilendra Mishra as Azad, complementing Ajay Devgn’s Bhagat Singh. The narrative wove their shared struggles seamlessly, highlighting Azad’s pivotal role in the freedom fight.

Aamir Khan brought a modern twist in 2006’s blockbuster ‘Rang De Basanti.’ Beyond its chart-topping soundtrack, the film drew direct inspiration from Azad and other freedom fighters, urging youth to reclaim patriotic fervor. Made on a 30 crore budget, it grossed over 100 crores, proving the timeless appeal of such stories.

Recent efforts include 2022’s ‘Hero of Nation Chandrashekhar Azad,’ born from 18 months of research, and 2020’s ‘Shaheed Chandrashekhar Azad’ directed by Rajesh Mittal with Rishabh Raj in the lead. These independent ventures underscore Azad’s enduring relevance, proving heroism transcends star power.

As we mark Azad’s punyatithi, these films remind us of his pledge: ‘Azad will not be caught alive.’ Bollywood ensures his flame burns bright, fueling national pride.
