CHENNAI – Tamil Nadu BJP has unleashed a scathing attack on the state government’s interim budget for 2026-27, branding it a ‘mirage’ that promises much but delivers little for the common people. Party spokesperson ANS Prasad accused the DMK administration of pushing the state deeper into a debt spiral while ignoring critical sectors like finance, economy, industry, and public welfare.

In a pointed critique, Prasad highlighted the absence of concrete, planned initiatives in the budget presented by Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu under Chief Minister MK Stalin’s leadership. ‘The government boasts of double-digit economic growth, but where is the benefit for ordinary citizens?’ he questioned. Instead, he claimed, the gains have been cornered by ruling party leaders, officials, and elected representatives, leaving the majority of society struggling.

Prasad drew attention to the unresolved grievances of key groups including teachers, doctors, engineers, farmers, the disabled, nurses, road workers, and anganwadi staff. Over the past five years, their persistent demands and protests have fallen on deaf ears, he alleged.

Specific projects came under fire too. The North Chennai Development Project lacks detailed updates, and funding clarity for cleaning the Cooum River remains elusive. Prasad also slammed the government for failing to announce firm measures to remove encroachments from water bodies, despite repeated court observations on the issue.

Raising alarms over the state’s mounting debt, the BJP leader questioned the status of a so-called expert committee formed to boost revenue and ensure fiscal stability. ‘Tamil Nadu is hurtling towards an unstable debt trajectory, and the Chief Minister owes clear answers,’ he demanded.

Labeling the budget ‘anti-people,’ the BJP asserted that the DMK has failed to honor pre-election promises, disappointing multiple sections of society. As political tensions simmer ahead of future elections, this budget critique underscores deepening rifts in Tamil Nadu’s governance landscape.
