KOLKATA: West Bengal BJP leaders unleashed a scathing attack on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over her opposition to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists. They accused her of rushing to hold elections with a flawed and error-ridden voter roll, potentially undermining the democratic process.
State BJP president and MP Suvendu Adhikari led the charge, declaring that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) is hell-bent on sabotaging the SIR process entirely. ‘This is their agenda—to conduct polls with a voter list full of mistakes,’ he asserted. Adhikari highlighted the deteriorating law and order, pointing to a recent shocking incident where a councillor near Kolkata allegedly kicked a man to death, sparking widespread outrage.
He drew a grim picture of post-2021 election violence, revealing that 56 BJP workers have been murdered and 27 women subjected to gang rapes. Despite ongoing CBI probes, he alleged police are busy tampering with evidence. ‘The situation in Bengal is dire, with opposition voices being systematically silenced,’ Adhikari added.
Senior BJP leader Dilip Ghosh piled on, criticizing Mamata’s Supreme Court petition against SIR as theatrical drama. ‘If she’s so confident of winning, let her face the court. Why this unnecessary spectacle?’ Ghosh questioned. He noted that the state government loses every Supreme Court battle due to baseless appeals, forcing citizens to seek judicial recourse amid a justice vacuum.
Ghosh didn’t hold back on broader accusations, claiming the ruling TMC targets women, opposition activists, and the Hindu community. ‘Hindus are fleeing Murshidabad to Malda for their lives. Villages see rampant atrocities on women, BJP events disrupted by police waving TMC flags. It’s a toxic nexus between TMC and law enforcement,’ he charged.
As political tensions simmer ahead of future elections, BJP vows to fight for clean voter lists and accountability, warning that Mamata’s tactics could disenfranchise genuine voters and perpetuate violence.
