The ongoing rise of the Ganges River in Bhagalpur, Bihar, has led to widespread flooding, impacting both rural and urban zones. Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University (TMBU) is significantly affected, with its premises under water. The administrative buildings, senate hall, and Vice-Chancellor’s residence are all flooded. The Professor Colony, situated close to the university, is entirely submerged, trapping its residents. Professors, teachers, and their families are facing severe difficulties as many of their homes are flooded, disrupting their daily lives. The PG Women’s Hostel has been evacuated due to the rising waters. However, some faculty members in the Professor Colony find themselves trapped, unable to leave or find safe areas. Families are forced to evacuate their homes with their belongings, using temporary methods of transport. People are also utilizing carts to move around, including accessing the college and departments.

The Professor Colony is experiencing heightened risks due to the presence of hazardous creatures. Local residents express concern about venomous snakes, such as Russell’s vipers, which are often seen in the area, and the floodwaters are increasing this threat. The potential spread of diseases is also a major concern. The contaminated water, unsanitary conditions, and mosquito infestations are escalating the risk of infections and waterborne illnesses. The lack of access to clean drinking water is making the situation worse. Affected people are seeking assistance from the authorities, but the water levels continue to rise, making the situation increasingly critical.

Reports on-site reveal a harrowing picture of professors and their families battling to safeguard their lives and possessions. The floods have gone beyond affecting rural areas and are now engulfing higher education institutions and their staff. The Ganges River in Bhagalpur is flowing 40 cm above the danger mark, causing widespread urban flooding. Professor Sanjay Kumar has shared about the various hardships faced by the residents. Professor Ambika Kumar from the Chemistry Department, along with his sick mother, is trapped and trying to protect their belongings by raising them up. Women are anxious about diseases resulting from dirty water, and children are frightened of dangerous animals. Cooking has become a struggle, forcing individuals to evacuate using carts as the situation worsens.
