In a scene straight out of a tragedy, the iron bars of Bhagalpur Camp Jail in Bihar separated a grieving family from their final goodbye. Two brothers, Purushottam Kumar and Ravi Kumar, have been locked up for a year under the NDPS Act from Shivlok Colony in Babarganj. When their mother passed away, her last wish was to see her sons one more time. But jail rules stood in the way.

Family members, overcome with emotion, brought the mother’s bier directly to the jail gates. They pleaded with authorities for hours, even raising slogans against the administration. The atmosphere grew tense as the final rites loomed. The deceased’s sister, Pushpa, recounted their desperate morning pleas, dismissed by procedural delays. ‘We had no choice but to bring her body here to fulfill her wish,’ she said.

Jailer Prakash Singh arrived amid the chaos. Recognizing the human anguish, he made a compassionate call. Special permission was granted to bring the bier inside the premises. The brothers, tears streaming down their faces, bid a tearful adieu to their mother through the bars and beyond. The grandfather expressed gratitude: ‘After hours of waiting, humanity prevailed. We thank the jailer.’

This poignant episode highlights the raw pain of separation amplified by legal shackles. Witnesses at the jail gate couldn’t hold back their tears, a stark reminder of family bonds transcending prison walls. As the funeral procession moved on, the story lingers as a call for more humane prison policies in moments of profound loss.
