In a shocking incident that has rattled Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district, a young man – son of an SSB jawan – was brutally shot by bike-borne assailants late Thursday night. The victim, Shivam Kumar, a college graduate from Shahbazpur, was heading to a friend’s birthday bash when the attack unfolded near Muradpur Dullaha village under Ahiyapur police station limits.
Shivam had stopped briefly near a litchi orchard by a mosque for a personal break, accompanied by friends on bikes. Suddenly, two masked miscreants zoomed in on their motorcycle and fired a single shot that pierced his abdomen. Chaos erupted as the gunshot echoed through the quiet rural lane. His friends rushed the bleeding 20-something to a private hospital in Bairiya, where surgeons successfully extracted the bullet during emergency surgery.
Doctors report Shivam’s condition remains critical, with internal injuries complicating recovery. His father, Umesh Kumar, serves with the Sashastra Seema Bal in Araria district, leaving the family in distress. Shivam’s mother insisted to investigators that they harbor no enmities, painting a picture of an ordinary family thrust into nightmare.
Police response was swift but sparked local fury. Ahiyapur station officers arrived first, followed by ASP and City SP for oversight. Yet, residents lambasted the delay – the site is just 500 meters from SDPO office. ‘Criminals roam fearless because patrols are absent,’ fumed villagers, pointing to the orchard as a haven for addicts and smack peddlers despite repeated complaints.
Adding intrigue, police revealed Shivam has a chequered past: an FIR for kidnapping hangs over him. Officers plan to record his statement post-recovery before filing the FIR. Raids are underway in nearby areas to nab the shooters. This brazen daytime-like attack underscores Muzaffarpur’s spiraling lawlessness, demanding urgent policing overhaul.
