In a major breakthrough, Gopalganj police have cracked the daring theft at the revered Thave Durga Temple in Bihar. Four thieves, who stole precious ornaments including the crown of Goddess Durga a month ago, have been arrested. All stolen jewelry has been recovered intact.
Superintendent of Police Vinay Tiwari announced the arrests during a press conference. The incident occurred on the night of December 17-18 when masked intruders broke into the temple premises and fled with gold and silver items adorning the deity. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) was promptly formed to probe the case.
The arrested individuals include Urf Sharif Alam, his brother Chand Alam, a woman accomplice, and Ejaz Ali from Chhotpur village in Siwan district. While the others were nabbed earlier, Sharif Alam evaded capture by constantly shifting hideouts across Siwan, Chapra, and Gopalganj. Acting on a tip-off, police cornered him in Bhojpurwa village.
From their possession, officers recovered half of the gold crown, part of a gold necklace, and a silver umbrella. All suspects were produced in court and remanded to judicial custody. SP Tiwari assured that the SIT, comprising Sadar SDPO Pranjal Kumar, Circle Inspector Karmveer Prasad Singh, and other officers, will record witness statements within 15 days to expedite a fast-track trial.
The team members are set to receive rewards upon securing convictions. This swift action has restored faith among devotees and highlighted the vigilance of Gopalganj police in protecting religious sites.
