In Bihar, India, Beena Devi, known affectionately as the ‘Mushroom Lady,’ is a shining example of transformation and women’s empowerment. From the village of Tilkari in Munger district, Beena’s life story is a testament to the power of determination. Her life changed dramatically with the introduction of mushroom cultivation.

In the past, Beena faced the challenge of raising her four children without adequate means. She lacked land and resources for farming. Undeterred, she started cultivating mushrooms, which not only improved her own life but also spurred a significant women’s empowerment initiative. Today, around 70,000 women have been inspired by her example and are improving their financial situations. Beena Devi’s children now benefit from better educational opportunities. Prime Minister Modi highlighted her work in his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ program, and she received recognition from President Ram Nath Kovind in 2020.

Beena’s vision was to empower women in her community, transforming mushroom farming into a mission for social upliftment. Consequently, women in over 100 villages are now involved in mushroom cultivation. The initial days of Beena’s journey were marked by severe hardships, including times when providing meals was a struggle. Despite these challenges, Beena persisted, procuring mushroom seeds and starting cultivation under her bed. After an initial period of setbacks, she received training from an agricultural university. She then began using new techniques. Today, Beena’s earnings have reached substantial amounts.
