A spine-chilling crime in Bihar’s Darbhanga has ignited public fury. On Saturday night, a 6-year-old girl was brutally raped and murdered near a pond while playing. The accused, a local tempo driver named Vikas Mahto, lured the child away from her playmates. Her blood-soaked body was discovered hours later after dogs’ incessant barking alerted locals.
The perpetrator, notorious for his alcohol addiction, had been abandoned by three wives. He lived with his parents. As news spread Sunday morning, enraged residents blocked roads at Bela More, demanding the accused be handed over. Stones pelted at police vehicles shattered windows, forcing Senior Superintendent of Police Jagunath Reddy and District Magistrate Kaushal Kumar to intervene personally.
Police resorted to lathi charge to disperse the mob. By late night, six named rioters were arrested under SDPO Rajiv Kumar’s supervision. CCTV footage is aiding identification of 30 named and 200 unidentified suspects, with FIRs registered at Vishwavidyalaya police station.
SSP Reddy assures a speedy trial to deliver stringent punishment. Postmortem reports are awaited for charge sheet filing. The area is now calm, child’s last rites completed. Authorities vow swift justice amid community outrage over rising crimes against minors.
