In a shocking incident from Bihar’s Samastipur district, a 23-year-old student preparing for competitive exams was allegedly kidnapped from a library, drugged unconscious, and forced into a marriage ceremony. The disturbing event unfolded in Chakranjali village under Shahpur Patori police station limits, sending ripples of outrage across social media.
Sumit Kumar, whose name has been changed for privacy, left home for his regular study session at the local library. When he didn’t return by late night, his family launched a frantic search. To their horror, they learned that local villagers had abducted him and were compelling him into a ‘pakdaoua’ or forced wedding.
Viral videos circulating online capture the harrowing moments. In one clip, Sumit suddenly collapses during the rituals, his body limp from the sedative. Undeterred, the crowd holds him upright, completing the ceremonies amid chants and celebrations. Another footage shows the young man locked in a room, desperately pleading for help after being held captive for over 24 hours.
Local police, led by Patouri DSP BK Medhavi, confirm no formal complaint has been filed yet by the family. However, preliminary probes reveal a possible love angle between Sumit and the bride. ‘We learned about this through social media and news reports,’ the officer stated. ‘Teams are verifying the videos’ authenticity, and legal action will follow once facts are confirmed.’
This case highlights the persistent issue of forced marriages in rural India, where social pressures often override individual consent. As investigations deepen, the nation watches closely, demanding justice for the victim and accountability for those responsible. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for stronger awareness and enforcement against such archaic practices.
