Bihar Violence: Land Dispute Turns Deadly in Vaishali

by World Opinion

In a shocking escalation of a long-standing land dispute, the quiet village of Lodipur in Vaishali district, Bihar, erupted into chaos on Wednesday. What began as a simmering feud between two rival factions exploded into widespread violence, marked by rampant vandalism, arson, and looting. Eyewitnesses described a scene straight out of a nightmare, with mobs armed with sticks, bricks, and stones descending upon homes and shops.

The primary target was a furniture store owned by one of the aggrieved parties. Attackers smashed everything in sight before setting the premises ablaze, sending plumes of black smoke billowing into the sky. Videos circulating on social media capture the brutality in stark detail: frenzied crowds hurling stones and methodically destroying property while terrified residents fled for safety.

Manjay Sharma, a victim from the assaulted side, recounted the horror. He alleged that Upendra Rai and his hundreds of supporters launched a coordinated assault, making off with around 1 lakh rupees in cash and goods worth 3 lakhs. A motorcycle was also vandalized in the melee. ‘They came like a horde, looting wedding savings and family heirlooms,’ Sharma told reporters from his hospital bed.

The human toll was devastating. Nine people, including women and children, sustained injuries ranging from fractures to severe burns. Among the wounded are Manjay Sharma (42), Sanjay Sharma (45), Ranjay Kumar (18), Sheela Devi (38), Sharmila Kumari (15), Neha Kumari (12), Muskan Kumari (15), Sonu Kumar (10), and Muni Devi (40). All were rushed to Hajipur Sadar Hospital, where doctors battled to stabilize the most critical cases.

This tragedy stems from a protracted legal battle over land ownership, with a title suit dragging on in courts for years. Tensions had been building, but no one anticipated such ferocity. Police arrived swiftly after distress calls, detaining one suspect and restoring order amid heightened security. Both sides have filed cross-complaints of assault, and authorities promise a thorough probe.

As the village licks its wounds, questions loom large. Will justice prevail in this cycle of vengeance? Bihar’s law enforcement faces yet another test in curbing rural violence fueled by property disputes. Residents urge faster resolution of land cases to prevent future bloodshed.
