Patna’s legislative halls echoed with sharp exchanges as Bihar’s budget session nears its close on Friday. The contentious liquor prohibition law, in place since 2016, dominated debates, with opposition leaders accusing the government of turning it into a farce.
RJD MLA Bhai Virendra didn’t mince words outside the assembly, telling reporters that home delivery of liquor is rampant across Bihar. ‘If borders are so secure, how are these consignments slipping through?’ he questioned, hinting at involvement of influential NDA leaders. He claimed consumption has surged beyond pre-ban levels, urging stricter enforcement.
The controversy escalated when RJD MLC Sunil Kumar provocatively stated he’d arrange liquor delivery right inside the assembly premises on the session’s last day. Kumar, a close aide to Lalu Prasad Yadav, asserted that prohibition has failed spectacularly—alcohol availability is ubiquitous, and dry drugs are now devastating youth.
JD(U) MLC and spokesperson Neeraj Kumar fired back, warning of imminent arrests on February 27, a ‘auspicious day.’ He mocked RJD’s past, revealing the party received over Rs 46 crore from liquor firms via electoral bonds. ‘Those who take will sing their tune,’ he quipped, promising the full force of law against any violations.
As the session wraps up, this verbal showdown underscores deep political divides over Bihar’s prohibition policy. Critics argue it’s bred corruption and black markets, while rulers defend it as a social necessity. With elections looming, the liquor ban remains a hot-button issue, testing the NDA government’s resolve amid rising accusations of selective enforcement.
