In a seismic shift ahead of Assam’s assembly elections, former Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Bhupen Kumar Bora is set to join the Bharatiya Janata Party on February 22. The announcement follows a crucial meeting at Bora’s residence in Ghoramara, Guwahati, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday.

The rendezvous, which took place just a day after Bora tendered his resignation from the Congress, has sent ripples through the state’s political landscape. Sarma personally visited Bora’s home, where family members welcomed him with a traditional ‘aarti’ ceremony—a gesture laden with symbolic weight.

Congress leadership scrambled to retain Bora, delaying acceptance of his resignation and urging him to reconsider. But Bora stood firm, and now his formal entry into BJP is all but confirmed.

Sarma had previously publicly invited Bora, hinting at a ‘safe seat’ in the upcoming polls. This development underscores BJP’s aggressive expansion strategy while exposing Congress’s deepening internal fractures.

Bora’s departure is a body blow to Congress, already grappling with leadership vacuum and organizational woes. Analysts predict it could tilt the electoral balance further in BJP’s favor, reshaping Assam’s political equations just months before the polls.

As February 22 approaches, all eyes are on how this high-profile switch will influence voter sentiments and party dynamics in the northeast state.
