In a landmark announcement, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed plans to establish the state’s second legislative assembly complex in Dibrugarh. The foundation stone for this ambitious project will be laid on January 30 by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Speaking on social media platform X, Sarma described the move as a historic moment for Dibrugarh, positioning it as Assam’s emerging second capital. This initiative aims to decentralize governance, bringing administration closer to the people of upper Assam and fostering balanced regional development.

The new assembly will not only streamline legislative proceedings beyond Dispur but also strengthen institutional presence in the upper regions. Sarma emphasized that it reflects the government’s long-term vision for inclusive growth, administrative efficiency, and responsive governance.

Dibrugarh, already a key political, economic, and cultural hub, will see its strategic importance amplified. The project promises to spur economic activity, create jobs, and boost infrastructure, urban development, and connectivity in the area.

By enabling better engagement between elected representatives and citizens, this step will fortify democratic processes. Sarma expressed confidence that Shah’s involvement marks the beginning of a new chapter in Assam’s administrative journey, aligning with the state’s broader development agenda.
