In a shocking incident from Assam’s Cachar district, police have arrested a 25-year-old man in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a woman on Silchar Bypass. The arrest of Nilotpal Das, a resident of Tapovan Nagar in Silchar, was made on Tuesday following a complaint lodged on February 19.
The case involves a harrowing ordeal where seven individuals allegedly gang-raped the woman while holding her male companion at knifepoint. According to the FIR, the attackers arrived in an SUV, assaulted the couple, and took turns assaulting the victim. Preliminary investigations reveal that Rs 10,000 was transferred via UPI during the incident, pointing to possible extortion.
During interrogation, Das admitted to being at the scene but denied any rape or witnessing such an act. He claimed he and his associates targeted couples in parked vehicles to extort money. Cachar SSP Parth Pratim Das confirmed the arrest and ongoing efforts to nab another suspect.
‘We are probing all angles including extortion and rape. The public is urged to maintain peace and avoid sharing unverified information,’ the SSP stated. The final medical report from Silchar Medical College is awaited, after which further details will be released.
Social media has been abuzz with demands for justice, but police warn against spreading rumors that could incite panic. The investigation continues as authorities work to unravel the full extent of this brutal crime.
