New Delhi witnessed a pivotal announcement from the Election Commission of India on Sunday as Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar unveiled the dates for assembly elections across four states and one Union Territory. Assam’s 126 assembly seats will go to polls in a single phase on April 9, with results set to be declared on May 4.
The comprehensive schedule for Assam includes the gazette notification on March 16, nomination filings closing on March 23, scrutiny on March 24, and withdrawal deadline on March 26. This streamlined process ensures the entire electoral exercise wraps up before May 6.
With approximately 2.5 crore voters expected to participate, the Commission has ramped up security measures to guarantee a seamless voting experience. CEC Kumar highlighted recent visits to all poll-bound states, engaging with political parties, officials, and voters to fine-tune preparations.
Discussions extended to enforcement agencies, district election officers, police heads, and state election commissioners. Special emphasis was placed on youth and first-time voters, alongside appreciation for booth-level officers (BLOs) who play a crucial role in smooth operations.
Innovative steps include women-only polling stations managed entirely by female staff, promoting inclusivity. The ECI remains committed to conducting free, fair, transparent, and secure elections, empowering every voter to exercise their franchise without fear or coercion.
