Guwahati buzzed with political activity on Thursday as the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Assam formally entered the fray for the Rajya Sabha elections. Three candidates—Jogen Mohan, Teras Gowala, and Promod Boro—submitted their nomination papers at the Assam Legislative Assembly complex, marking the official start of the electoral process for three vacant seats.

Central Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, a key NDA figure, was present during the filings, lending his support to the nominees. Jogen Mohan and Teras Gowala represent the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), while Promod Boro is the alliance’s consensus pick, showcasing the coalition’s unity.

Sonowal addressed the media post-nominations, emphasizing the candidates’ deep roots in Assam’s diverse communities. ‘These leaders hail from Barak Valley, Brahmaputra Valley, and the hill regions, embodying the state’s rich mosaic,’ he stated. He praised their long-standing service to the public and confidence that they would champion Assam’s issues robustly in Parliament.

With the ruling NDA commanding a clear majority in the 126-member Assam Assembly, victory appears assured without the need for a contest. The elections fill seats whose incumbents’ terms are expiring. Should polling be required, it will proceed as per Election Commission schedules.

This smooth nomination process underscores the NDA’s dominance in Assam, setting the stage for stronger representation in the Upper House. Sonowal congratulated the trio, predicting they would amplify Assam’s voice on national platforms alongside BJP and UPPL allies.
